Remove WinHTTrack

November 17, 2010

At one time or another we all try software from various vendors. The software that I am least likely to keep is also the software most badly behaved. Uninstalling WinHTTrack is one such badly behaving application that still leaves components running even after uninstalling.

To remove it from my browser and assure that it was not wasting my CPU cycles, I had to remove the following entries from my registry and reboot. If you edit your registry, make a backup first and be certain that you can read it.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
   \AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\WinHTTrack
\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache\(entry located in here with WinHTTrack in the name)
   \Software\WinHTTrack Website Copier
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
   \Classes\Applications\WinHTTrack.exe
   \Classes\WinHTTrackIEBar.WinHTTrackLauncher

   \Classes\WinHTTrackProject
\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{36ECAF82-3300-8F84-092E-AFF36D6C7040} (or similar entry, with a subkey containing WinHTTrack information)
   \Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Tracing\WinHTTrack_RASAPI32
   \Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Tracing\WinHTTrack_RASMANCS
   \Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WinHTTrack Website Copier_is1
