SOLVED – Outlook stopped working with Google gMail.

April 24, 2012

In 2012 Google’s stock price has varied by 15%.  This month, the slide is over 10% already.  So what do companies do when they need to cut costs and improve performance?  Well Google seems to be limiting heavy usage of Gmail with an apparent “suspicious use” campaign.

If you find Outlook suddenly stopped working with you Gmail account, getting the message:

ERR {AUTH} Username and password not accepted.

You can fix the problem by visiting http://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha

You then have 10 minutes to login successfully.

Step 2 is to reconfigure your Outlook email client so that it does not check faster than every 10 minutes.

I had been checking for new messages every 5 minutes and I got dinged regularly with “suspicious activity” from Google.  To quote from the Google support page at http://bit.ly/I7yLvH, “Make sure your mail client isn’t set to check for new mail too often. If your mail client checks for new messages more than once every 10 minutes…” you’re screwed, or words to that effect.
